For Parents

If you are the parent or guardian of a student aged 18 or under, who is planning to attend the summer school, please read the information below carefully before you consent to their application.

  • We aim to ensure that students are safe and happy during their time on the course. We take this responsibility very seriously and expect students as well as their parents and referees to do the same. We have a large number of students, ranging in age between 16 and 25+ years, on an extensive site, so it is not possible or appropriate to supervise all the students at all times.
  • Please ensure that your child is familiar with the Rules of the Summer School and is aware that breaches of the rules are likely to result in their being asked to leave.
  • The atmosphere and approach of the Summer School is much more like a university than a school environment, so students need to have the maturity and independence to cope in that situation.  This is one of the great advantages of the course as an experience for a Sixth Form student, but it does mean it is not suitable for everyone.
  • Students are permitted to go off-site between teaching sessions, though they are instructed to stay in groups if they go out in the evening. Overnight absences are only permitted with prior arrangement and for those aged 18 or under that requires parental permission. Students are expected to attend all teaching sessions and to sign into their boarding houses at 11pm each night, but between those times they will not be directly supervised.
  • We depend on parents to inform us of any issues that might have an impact on their child’s well-being at Bryanston. We will always try to find a way to enable students to attend and make a success of their time on the course, but this is much easier if we can pre-empt any problems. We need to know about mental and emotional issues as much as physical problems and we aim to deal with both in the same inclusive, considerate and sensitive way.
  • We do our best to provide pastoral support for our students as we do understand the pressures of the course, but with almost all staff being primarily engaged with their Greek teaching, it is not possible for us to cater appropriately for those with very significant problems that are likely to require a lot of extra time and input from staff. If you have any concerns about this, please discuss the issues with the Course Secretary in advance.
